Freedom Is A Myth: A Must-Read For HR Consultants

What is freedom to you? For some, it may mean having the ability to take a holiday anywhere at any time. For others, it could be getting out on the open road after a long day at work and feeling the breeze in their hair. For others, it may mean financial freedom. Everybody’s definition of freedom is their own, but it turns out that freedom as an overall concept may not be exactly what you think it is.

This article explores what freedom is and isn’t, and how it applies to the way you work. For personalised advice, contact our team at MindAbility today.

What Is Freedom In Business?

Freedom can take many forms. The way the word is interpreted can vary greatly depending on the context, culture, and individual perspectives.

‘Sure’, I hear you say, ‘But what does that actually mean?’

Well, at its core, freedom refers to being able to act, think, and express oneself without constraints or limitations imposed by external forces such as laws, institutions, or individuals. And it’s a word that has seen its fair share of publicity over the past few years, that’s for sure!

One thing freedom is not, however, is absolute.

The Rise Of The Influencer

How many of us see, on a day to day or even hour by hour basis, the number of influencers online who seem to work no longer than 20 seconds every day?

Anybody with a social media account is familiar with influencers, whether they be influencing you to buy fashion or beauty products, travel the world, or buy a new car. They appear to have it all, from money and fame to expensive gadgets that haven’t even hit the market yet. What’s more is that they always seem to be doing their daily 20 seconds of work from an idyllic location (usually beachside, with a cocktail in hand)!

It raises the question: How do these people work for no more than several minutes a day, yet seemingly make £1 million a year?

I don’t buy it— and I hope you don’t, either.

Freedom Is A Myth

You may look at these influencers and believe they have it so easy and that freedom was handed to them on a silver platter. Yes, in some cases it may have been, but in other cases that freedom that you think you see may not even exist at all.

Freedom is a myth in the first few years of running your business.

It’s hard. It’s bloody hard work.

You’ve had to change your mindset from that of an employee— where you receive a fixed income month in, month out in most cases— to having to change your relationship with money. This can be a difficult transition, as you spent years or even decades seeing and treating money in one specific way and now it’s something entirely different. You now control it, so please don’t let it control you.

You’ve got to work really hard to build your brand. Why should people work with you? What’s the outcome or difference you make? That takes time. You need to be doing all the good things in order to build that brand, get those glowing testimonials, get that social proof that what you’re doing actually makes an impact and a difference in the world.

Fear Not

If this sounds overwhelming, don’t worry. It may sound like a lot, but it’s much more achievable than you may think at the moment.

There are lots of people who can help you to accelerate your growth. But please, whatever you do, don’t get sucked into the myth that 20 seconds a day will make you a millionaire overnight.

Dreaming Of Freedom?

Those online influencers may seem to have it all— because that’s the image they’re selling to you. Nobody can have everything; it just isn’t possible! However, they could very well have things that you don’t, but that doesn’t mean they achieved it all in a day, a weekend, or even a year. You’ve put in the hard work to make it this far, so don’t stop now.

One way to keep going is with tailored business coaching. Whatever your business, there are resources such as workshops, events, and coaching to help you grow and scale what you do, helping you to get closer to that ‘cocktails on the beach’, #laptoplifestyle dream.
